LINCOLN, N.H. – Sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) and freshman Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) placed fourth individually in the women’s and men’s giant slalom, respectively, leading the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams to a pair of second place finishes in races held at Loon Mountain.
The Panthers had two in the top seven among the 65 women’s racers, while the Panther men’s team had three of the top seven finishers among the 80 skiers. Colby-Sawyer College topped the men’s team standings, while PSU, Boston College, Babson and MIT rounded out the top five. UMass Amherst took the women’s team scoring, ahead of PSU, Colby-Sawyer, Brown and BC.
Caflisch, who has finished in the top four in all five of her alpine starts this season, was joined in the top 10 by freshman Katie Van Riper (Carrabasset Valley, Maine), who placed seventh. Sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) recorded a solid 14th place finish, while junior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) came in 21st.
Bedard finished as PSU’s top skier for the first time this season. He got solid support from senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.), who placed fifth, senior Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.), who was seventh, and senior Billy Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.), who finished 13th.
The PSU teams will ski slalom races Sunday at Cranmore Mountain, making up races that were rained out on Jan. 14.
