SUNAPEE, N.H. – Senior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) won the men’s giant slalom race for the Plymouth State University ski team Friday at Mount Sunapee, leading the Panthers to the team victory in the first MacConnelll Division race of the season.
The Panther men had four of the top six finishers among the 76 racers and placed first among nine schools, while the Panther women had two top 10 finishers among 82 skiers and placed fourth among 10 schools. The race was limited to one run due to weather and snow conditions.
Right behind DiNapoli in the men’s race was sophomore Owen Carey-Hatch (Gilford, N.H.) in third place, and senior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) and freshman Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) tied for fifth. Two other freshmen posted strong finishes as Gary Rumley (Rumford, Maine) came in 12th and Chris Roche (Hingham, Mass.) 14th.
PSU won the men’s team standings, ahead of runner-up Colby-Sawyer College and third-place Boston College. The rest of the standings included (in order of finish) UMass Amherst, Babson College, MIT, University of Connecticut, Brown University, and Saint Anselm College.
Senior Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was the top Panther finisher in the women’s race, coming in ninth place. Sophomore Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) was right behind in a tie for 10th, followed by senior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) in 22nd and freshman Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) in 24th.
Colby-Sawyer took the women’s team title, with UMass in second and Brown third. Plymouth State was fourth, ahead of (in order of finish) Boston College, Smith College, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.
The same teams will compete Saturday in another giant slalom race at Mount Sunapee.
