NORTH CONWAY, N.H. – The Plymouth State University alpine ski racing season got underway on Thursday, with the Panther men’s and women’s teams placing third and fifth, respectively, in the giant slalom races at the University of Connecticut Winter Carnival held at Cranmore Mountain.
The PSU men’s squad placed third among nine schools, finishing behind Boston College and Colby-Sawyer College and ahead of the University of Massachusetts, MIT, Saint Anselm College, UConn, Brown University and Babson College. The Panther women took fifth among 10 teams, coming in behind BC, Colby-Sawyer, UMass and Smith and ahead of Brown, St. Anselm, UConn, MIT and Babson.
Plymouth State had two top-10 finishers and four skiers in the top 20 in the men’s event, which included 80 racers. Sophomore Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) led the Panthers with a fifth place finish, and junior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) was not far behind in ninth. Senior Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) returned after missing all of last season with an injury and finished 16th, and sophomore Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y.) ended up 18th.
Junior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) led the PSU contingent in the women’s race, placing ninth among the 71 competitors. Junior Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was the next Panther finisher in 15th, followed closely by sophomore Kate Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) and senior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 18th and 19th, respectively.
The schools will compete again on Friday at Cranmore in the slalom races.
