SUNAPEE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University alpine ski teams registered solid finishes Friday in the final giant slalom race of the regular season, the Colby-Sawyer College Winter Carnival at Mount Sunapee.
The Panther men placed five racers in the top 14 (among the 88 skiers) and finished second as a team among the 10 schools. The Panther women had three skiers finish in the top 18 (among 68 racers) and took fourth among the 10 schools.
Senior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) led the PSU men’s contingent with a sixth place finish, while senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) came in ninth and junior Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) was 11th. Barlow, a three-time All-American, has been a top 10 finisher in eight out of nine races this season, and Demetry has been a top 10 finisher six times. Other top PSU men’s placers included freshman Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) in 12th and junior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 14th.
Host Colby-Sawyer took the men’s team standings on their home course, with the Panthers finishing runner-up. The rest of the teams, in order of finish, included UMass, Boston College, Babson, Brown, Saint Anselm, MIT, UConn, and New England College.
Freshman Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the Panther women, placing second overall. She has placed in the top three in seven of nine races this season, including four first-place finishes. The other top racers for PSU were freshman Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) in 14th, and junior Kelsey Real (Lanesboro, Mass.) in 18th.
Brown won the women’s team standings, with UMass second, Colby-Sawyer third and PSU fourth. Rounding out the field, in order of finish, were Smith, Boston College, Babson, MIT, Saint Anselm and UConn.
The teams conclude the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 19) with a slalom race at Pat’s Peak (N.H.)
