DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell, Jct., NY) led the Western Connecticut State University softball team in a doubleheader sweep of Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon, 4-1 and 8-2, at Westside Field.
The Colonials, now 16-9 overall and 2-2 in the Little East Conference, extend their win streak to nine games and they have now won 11 of their last 12 games dating back to Apr. 6. PSU dropped to 3-16 overall and 1-3 in the Little East.
DiMaggio went 3-for-7 in the twinbill and belted her first home run of the season, a two-run line drive over the right field fence in the nightcap. She had three RBI on the day, and finished the week batting .560 with 14 hits in 25 at bats with 10 RBI.
WestConn scattered 13 hits in the second game with Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, Conn.), Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.), Mallory Zenkus (Seymour, Conn.) and DiMaggio each having two hits.
In the nightcap, Shelby Slie (Seymour, Conn.) allowed two runs and four hits while striking out five and walking three. She improves to 9-4 on the year.
In the opener, Christina Scordato (Hillsdale, N.J.) improved to 4-2 after allowing one run on four hits while striking out two and walking one. Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, Conn.) and Julia Wullen (Bergenfield, N.J.) led the Colonials hitting attack with two hits and an RBI apiece.
Plymouth State managed only four hits in each game. Sophomore Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener, and classmate Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) had two hits, including a double and two RBI, for the Panthers in the nightcap.
Both teams return to action Tuesday with LEC doubleheaders against their archrivals. PSU meets Keene State in the home opener at D&M Park in Plymouth (4:00 p.m.), while WestConn travels to Eastern Connecticut (5:00 p.m.)
