FORT MYERS, Fla. – Plymouth State University dropped a pair of softball games Tuesday in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Panthers were upended 4-1 by Middlebury College in the first game, and 7-4 by Colby College in the night cap.
PSU took a 1-0 lead against Middlebury in the second inning of the opener, but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the third. A walk, two hits and an error led to two unearned runs, saddling senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) with the loss. Junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) went 1-for-3 at the plate in the setback, and freshman Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) also had a key hit.
Normand also had a strong game at the plate in the loss to Colby, smacking two doubles and knocking in two runs. Her two-run double highlighted a four-run third inning for PSU that pulled the Panthers to within a run at 5-4. Eaton went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI but took the loss in the circle to fall to 1-2.
Middlebury is now 3-3 and Colby improved to 2-3.
PSU continues action in Florida with two games Wednesday, meeting Wellesley College at 9:00 a.m. and Wisconsin-Whitewater at 1:00 p.m.
