PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) and junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) combined on a pair of 1-0 shutouts Thursday afternoon as Plymouth State University swept Fitchburg State College in a non-conference softball doubleheader in the home opener at D&M Park.
The Panthers, who had their last three doubleheaders rained out, improve to 4-8 on the season, while Fitchburg State drops to 4-11.
Jeffs struck out 12 batters and allowed only one hit in the opener, a fifth-inning single by freshman Jess Morse (Milford, Mass.). The Panthers scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning when Eaton led off with a double, and pinch runner Alyssa Satas (Troy, N.H.) later scored on an infield grounder by freshman Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H.). Junior Jenn Neslusan (Douglas, Mass.) was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Falcons.
Eaton allowed only three hits in six-plus innings of the nightcap, but one was a lead-off triple by senior Alyssa Freda (Leominster, Mass.) in the top of the seventh. Jeffs came off the bench to strike out the side for her second save of the season and make a winner out of Eaton. Jeffs increased her career strikeout total to 985, third most in NCAA Division III history.
The Panthers scored the only run they would need in the fifth inning when Eaton singled with one out and came around to score on a double by Curry. Sophomore Michelle Yuille (Achushnet, Mass.) took the loss for the Falcons.
PSU returns to action Saturday at D&M Park with a Little East Conference doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut (1:00 p.m.) Fitchburg State plays a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference twinbill Saturday at Westfield State (12:00 p.m.)
