NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team rallied with their backs against the wall three times, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, 11th and 12th innings, finally pulling out a 9-8 victory over Plymouth State University in the second game of Sunday’s Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center.
PSU had rallied to earn a 5-1 extra-inning victory in the opener, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Panthers held a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap, only to see UMD score three times to force extra innings, tied at 3-3.
The Panthers surged ahead with three runs in the top of the 11th, only to see UMD respond with three more in the last of the 11th to deadlock the game at 6-6. PSU went ahead 8-6 in the top of the 12th, but the home team staged the final rally with three in the bottom of the 12th for the 9-8 victory.
Senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) went the distance to earn the victory for PSU in the opener, allowing only one run on two hits and two walks in eight innings, striking out five. The Panthers outhit the Corsairs in the first game, 10-2. Senior Michelle Dubois (Auburn, Maine) led the Panther hit parade with two, and junior Jess Fortin (Chester, N.H./Pinkerton) had the big hit in the four-run eighth inning with a two-run double.
Plymouth State recorded 13 hits in the nightcap, with freshman Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) leading the way with three hits, including a triple and two RBI. Fortin and junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) each collected two hits, and freshman Jen Dupont (Pembroke, Mass.) drove in two runs. Eaton pitched into the 12th innings before Jeffs came in for the final two batters.
PSU, 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the LEC, returns home to host Saint Joseph’s College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) UMD drops to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
