LEWISTON, Maine – Plymouth State University won two more volleyball matches Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship match of the Bates Invitational Tournament, but Colby College defeated the Panthers in three games in the final to win the tourney title.
PSU knocked off Worcester State Saturday morning in pool play in three games (30-26, 30-17, 30-21), and defeated Bates in the semifinals in four games (25-30, 30-25, 30-22, 30-19). Colby proved too much for the Panthers, though, winning the title match, 3-0 (30-27, 30-19, 30-26). Plymouth State is ranked 14th in this week’s New England poll, while Bates is 11th and Colby 13th.
Juniors Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) were named to the All-Tournament Team for PSU. Ciulla registered 12 kills in the pool-play win over Worcester State, and added 21 kills and 13 digs in the semifinal victory over Bates. Landry contributed 54 kills in Saturday’s three matches, including 22 against Worcester State and 14 in the title match against Colby. She also had 18 kills and 16 digs in the win over Bates.
Junior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) was busy all day, recording 37 assists in the first match, 48 in the triumph over Bates, and 35 in the setback to Colby. Strong defensive efforts were provided by junior Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), who had 13 digs against both Bates and Colby, and freshman Kim Tobyne (Bedford, N.H.), who recorded 10 digs against Worcester State.
The Panthers improves to 16-7 overall with their strong performance over the weekend. PSU returns to action Tuesday with a Little East Conference match at Foley Gymnasium against UMass Dartmouth (6:00 p.m.).
