PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University volleyball team split its first two matches Friday evening in the JWU Fall Classic, hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
The Panthers swept Newbury College in the opening match of the tournament, 30-17, 30-19, 30-26, extending their winning streak to four. PSU was derailed in four games in its second match of the evening, 23-30, 30-24, 30-28, 37-35.
Freshmen Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) and Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.) led the Panther to the win over Newbury. Badeau recorded 12 kills and Kleckner contributed 40 set assists.
Junior Kaitlyn Collins (Mahwah, N.J.) and Badeau were the top Panther hitters in the loss to Conn. College, Collins smashing 13 kills and Badeau 12. Kleckner added 42 assists to her tally, and sophomore libero Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) recorded 32 digs.
In other matches in the tournament, Eastern Connecticut defeated Johnson & Wales (3-0) and Conn. College (3-1), and Johnson & Wales knocked off Newbury, 3-0.
PSU, now 9-4 overall, continues play in the tournament Saturday with matches against Johnson & Wales (10:00 a.m.) and Eastern Conn. (12:00 p.m.) Entering Saturday’s play in the tourney, Newbury has a record of 7-12, while Conn. College is 8-5, Eastern Conn. is 12-5, and JWU is 10-8.
