WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women’s volleyball team claimed a share of the Little East Conference regular season title for the second straight year Saturday afternoon, after splitting a pair of matches at an LEC Round Robin, hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University.
The Panthers came from behind to defeat Rhode Island College in the opening match, three-games-to-two (30-28, 27-30, 22-30, 32-30, 15-12). PSU fought back from an RIC match-point in the fourth game while trailing two-games-to-one. Plymouth State was then defeated in four games in the second match of the afternoon by Eastern Connecticut (30-19, 24-30, 30-25, 30-20).
Plymouth State, 18-13 overall, and Eastern Connecticut, 21-9 overall, end up in a tie for the LEC regular season crown, both teams at 6-1 in conference play. PSU and Eastern shared last year’s regular season crown with RIC and Western Connecticut, all four schools finishing 5-2 in LEC matches.
Seniors Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) had outstanding days for the Panthers. Ciulla finished with 19 kills, 26 digs and six blocks against RIC, and recorded 16 kills, 28 digs and three blocks against ECSU. Landry registered 24 kills and 25 digs in the win over RIC, and 14 kills and 25 digs in the match against Eastern Conn. Senior Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) recorded 55 assists in the first match and 43 assists in the second, while sophomore Kim Tobyne (Bedford, N.H.) chipped in with 60 digs on the day.
PSU wraps up the regular season with a match on Tuesday at Salem State (7:00 p.m.) and participation in the Brandeis Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
