NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) had 11 kills and 13 digs Friday night to lead third-seeded Plymouth State University to a 30-18, 30-27, 32-30 win over sixth-seeded Roger Williams University in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England Volleyball tournament at the Coast Guard Academy.
Senior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.), had nine kills to go with a team-high 24 digs while setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) had 29 assists along with 11 digs for the Panthers (23-16), who rallied from a 25-20 deficit to win game two and then scored the final three points in game three to advance to the semfinals.
Sophomore Amy Maurer led Roger Williams (19-9) with 11 kills and 19 digs while junior Caroline Smith had seven kills and 10 digs for the Hawks. Kirsten Bosworth led Roger Williams with 26 assists.
Plymouth State will take on second-seeded Wellesley College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the semifinals. Fourth-seeded Rivier College defeated fifth-seeded Endicott in Friday’s first match, and will face top-seeded Coast Guard Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the other semifinal. Wellesley and Coast Guard had first round byes.
The championship match will be played Saturday at 4 p.m.
