LEWISTON, Maine – Plymouth State University’s women’s volleyball team registered a big upset Saturday in the Bates College Invitational, upsetting Colby College in five games to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record.
The Panthers, ranked #13 in New England, knocked off the Mules, who are ranked #4 in New England. PSU won games 1 and 3, while Colby took the even numbered games before the Panthers pulled out the win with a 15-10 verdict in the fifth and decisive game. Plymouth State improves to 17-4 overall while Colby drops to 14-4.
In a tournament that included six of the top 15 ranked teams in New England, M.I.T. and Tufts both went 3-0 to post the best records in the tourney. (There was no team champion declared.) PSU finished 2-1 on the weekend, having defeated Bowdoin (#15 in New England) and lost to M.I.T. (#2 in New England) on Friday night.
Senior Sonia Trudell (Somersworth, N.H.) played outstanding defense, and was PSU’s selection on the All-Tournament Team. She finished the tournament with 33 digs, including 12 in the win over Colby.
“She maybe didn’t have the best statistics, but she played great,” said PSU coach Moira Long. “No way we would’ve done as well as we did without her.”
Senior Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Panthers with 18 kills apiece in the win over Colby, while sophomore Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) contributed 14 kills. Becky Landry finished the weekend with 37 kills, while Kelly Landry had 32 and Ciulla finished with 25.
Plymouth State is back in action Tuesday with a Little East Conference match at UMass Dartmouth (6:00 p.m.).
