BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Plymouth State University won three out of four matches to capture the Silver Bracket Saturday at the annual Bridgewater State Open Volleyball Tournament. The hosts took the overall tournament title by winning the Gold Bracket.
PSU opened tournament play by splitting a pair of matches Friday evening, defeating WPI in three games (30-28, 30-10, 30-24) and falling to Gallaudet University in four games (23-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-28). The Panthers rebounded with a pair of three-game wins Saturday, defeating Rhode Island College (30-21, 30-26, 30-23) and Rivier College (30-21, 30-14, 30-20).
The results of the weekend give the Panthers a 12-5 overall record. PSU was ranked 12th in New England entering the week.
Junior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) represented Plymouth State on the All-Tournament Team at Bridgewater State. She completed the tournament with 52 kills and 40 digs after posting a pair of double-doubles (double figures in both kills and digs) with 10 kills and 15 digs against WPI and 12 kills and 12 digs against Gallaudet. Landry also had seven service aces in the Gallaudet match and five against Rivier.
Junior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) also had a strong tournament for the Panthers. She recorded three double-doubles in four outings, finishing the tournament with a total of 44 kills, 50 digs and 10 blocks. She contributed a team-high 16 kills in the loss to Gallaudet and 15 digs against Rhode Island College.
Plymouth State plays a Little East Conference match Wednesday at UMass Boston (6:00 p.m.).
