WALTHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State University wrapped up the women’s volleyball regular season Saturday with a pair of three-game victories over Eastern Connecticut State University and Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) at the Brandeis Judges Classic.
The Panthers defeated ECSU 30-18, 30-12, 31-29 in Saturday’s first match, and came back with a 30-16, 30-20, 30-21 decision over SJC. Plymouth State finishes runner-up in the tournament with a 2-1 record, behind host Brandeis, which defeated PSU Friday night and won all three of its matches in the tourney to improve to 25-10.
PSU, ranked sixth in New England, concludes the regular season with a 27-6 overall record, setting a school record for wins in a season. The first Panther volleyball team set the standard with a 25-3 record in 1996, and last year’s team finished 25-11.
Senior Becky Landry (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panthers on Saturday, recording 10 kills in the win over Eastern Conn. and 11 kills in the victory over Saint Joe’s. Sophomore Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) added seven kills to help PSU in the ECSU match, and a team-high 15 digs against Saint Joseph’s. Sophomore Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) registered five kills against Eastern and eight against SJC.
Plymouth State, which finished second in the Little East Conference during the regular season with a 6-1 mark, receives a first-round bye in next week’s LEC Tournament. PSU will play in the semifinals next Saturday at 2:00 p.m., at top-seeded Western Connecticut, against the winner Wednesday’s match between sixth-seeded Keene State and third-seeded Southern Maine. The LEC Championship match is slated for Sunday at 12 noon.
