PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior guard Erica Poole scored 13 points Sunday afternoon to lead Plattsburgh State to a 56-45 victory over Plymouth State University in the championship game of the 4th Cardinal Classic women’s basketball tournament.
Poole scored nine of her 13 points in the second half as the Cardinals (2-0) built a commanding 50-29 lead with just over six minutes to play. Plymouth State (1-1) pulled to within seven points with less than two minutes to play, but Poole connected on four free throws and a short jumper to seal the victory.
Poole, along with Tiffany Hauser were named to the All-Tournament Team and Plattsburgh senior center Erin Hutchinson was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Hauser finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Hutchinson, who scored 27 in the opening game, scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds against Plymouth.
The Panthers were led in the championship game by freshman Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.), who scored nine points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) finished with seven points and sophomore Katie Susat (Glastonbury, Conn.) added six.
The Cardinals shot just over 30 percent from the field while Plymouth State connected at only a 26 percent clip.
The Panthers return to Plymouth for the home opener on Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium against Castleton State (5:30 p.m.).
