PROVIDENCE, RI. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s basketball team posted a thrilling 75-69 victory over Plymouth State University Thursday evening in a non-conference match-up at the Harborside Recreation Center.
Senior Samantha Cowens (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for Johnson & Wales, scoring a game-high 18 points with 15 rebounds while freshman Shannon Hunter (Thoreau, N.M.) added 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steaks in the win for the Wildcats.
Junior Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) led Plymouth State in the setback with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists while classmate Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 14 points and five assists.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead, using a 15-3 run to start the game. Plymouth State responded with a 14-2 run midway through the first half to knot the game at 19-19 with seven minutes to play. The Wildcats closed out the half on a 14-7 run to take a 33-26 lead at the break.
Trailing by five early in the second half, the Panthers used a 10-2 run to take a 48-45 lead with 9:00 remaining. The two teams would trade leads back-and forth until the contest was tied 67-67 with just 1:38 on the clock. JWU then used a 6-0 run, including a three-pointer by senior Shatoya Greene (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to take the 73-67 advantage and held on for the win.
Johnson & Wales improves to 5-5 on the season while Plymouth State falls to 4-5. The Wildcats return to action this Saturday when they travel to Westfield State for a non-conference contest (1:00 p.m.) PSU returns home to host UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference game Saturday at Foley Gymnasium (1:00 p.m.)
