WATERVILLE, Maine – The Plymouth State University’s women’s ice hockey team was defeated in its first road game of the season, 7-0, at the hands of Bates College.
Bates took a 6-0 lead in the first period and went on to win against the Panthers, who are in their second season as a team and first year as an athletic department affiliate. PSU concludes the first semester with a respectable 1-3 record.
PSU gave a strong effort against the Bobcats, led by the starting line-up of freshman Missy Fales (West Kingston, R.I.), sophomore Samantha Turner (Pawling, N.Y.) and junior Laura Scala (East Falmouth, Mass.) at forward, juniors Kelly Williams (Canaan, N.H.) and Sarah Giroux (Augusta, Maine) on defense, and sophomore Danielle Lewis (Scarborough, Maine) in goal.
Turner and sophomore Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) lead the Panthers in scoring at the break with two goals apiece, and Kelly Williams has a team-high three assists.
The Panthers will play eight more games in January and February, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 22 against MIT at Waterville Valley Ice Arena (6:00 p.m.).
