SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Junior Krista Pettrey (Williston, Vt.) and sophomore Molly Perron (Hartland, Vt.) scored two goals apiece Saturday afternoon, leading Plymouth State University’s women’s ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College.
PSU scored three times in the first period and twice in the second to take a 5-0 lead, and then maintained control the rest of the way despite allowing two third-period goals. The Panthers, who outshot the hosts 36-20, improve to 9-5 on the season with two games remaining.
Perron’s first goal, which was assisted by senior Angela Potvin (Augusta, Maine) and junior Sam Turner (Pawling, N.Y.) put the Panthers on the board midway through the first period. Pettrey put in both of her goals in the opening frame, the first from freshman Meryl Pye (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) at 12:31 and the second from sophomores Kelley Kirakiakos (Nashua, N.H.) and Holly Winchell (Atkinson, N.H.) at 15:01, to make it a 3-0 game at the first intermission.
Senior Holly Williams (Wolfeboro, N.H.) extended PSU’s lead to 4-0 with a goal from Kirakiakos and Missy Fales (West Kingston, R.I.) at 7:44 of the second period, and Perron notched her second of the game with a minute left in the period, with freshman Julie Robida (West Hartford, Conn.) collecting an assist on the play.
Juniors Dru MacGregor (Toronto, Ont.) and Erin Weimer (Northbrook, Ill.) potted third-period goals for Mount Holyoke, but PSU held the Lyons off for the win. Freshman goaltender Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) made 18 saves to earn the win in goal for the Panthers.
Plymouth State plays its final road game of the season Sunday (Feb. 12) at UMass Amherst’s ‘A’ team (1:25 p.m.) and returns home for the season finale next Saturday (Feb. 18) at Waterville Valley against the MIT Club Team. PSU defeated the MIT Club earlier this season, 3-2.
