SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael’s College women’s ice hockey team (1-2-0) opened its 2006-07 home schedule Friday night with a 6-1 win over Plymouth State University (0-1-0) at Cairns Arena.
Freshman Amanda Arponen (Plymouth, Mass.) scored for the Panthers, the first goal in program history with the assist credited to Kim Chandler (Andover, Mass.)
Sophomore Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt.) tallied two goals and Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt.) added a goal and a pair of assists to lead the Purple Knights. Sophomores Shannon Murphy (Wellesley, Mass.) and Leslie Pomponi (Belmont, Mass.) and freshman Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, Mass.) also recorded goals, and Kelly Adams (Chevy Chase, Md.) chipped in with two assists.
Saint Michael’s took the lead in the first period, as Pomponi skated in from the corner and stuffed it inside the post at the 10:33 mark. The Purple Knights made it 2-0 on a goal by Tourville, and added another when Bourgeois shot the puck as the goaltender was screened to make it 3-0.
Plymouth State got on the board with the program’s first goal when Arponen scored from Chandler’s assist.
The Purple Knights made it 4-1 at the 10:14 mark of the second period as Tourville tallied her second of the game after a long scrum in front of the net. Saint Michael’s added another goal in the third as Sweezey scored her first collegiate goal, and Murphy finished off the scoring after a nice set up pass from Adams.
Sophomore Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H.) got her first win of the season making 11 stops in the net. PSU sophomore Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) made 46 saves at the other end.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they finish their two-game series at 3 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
