PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team put the finishing touches on a perfect regular season Saturday afternoon, knocking off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 20-8, in a Little East Conference match-up at Arold Field.
The Panthers complete the regular season at 13-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while UMD drops to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. PSU extended its overall winning streak to 22 games, dating back to last season.
PSU also captured its third straight LEC regular season crown, and the top seed in next week’s LEC Tournament. In fact, the Panthers have won all 21 LEC games since the conference started women’s lacrosse in 2002. PSU also won New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance titles in 2000 and 2001.
UMD, which could have won a share of the LEC title and the top seed in the tournament with a victory, scored the first goal of the game just 17 seconds after the opening draw. PSU rebounded to score 10 unanswered goals, including five in the first three minutes, en route to a 15-4 halftime advantage. The Panthers coasted home to the victory in the second half.
Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) and sophomore Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) scored six goals apiece against UMD, with Sheridan registering three assists and Brown two. Freshman Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) contributed three goals for the Panthers, and classmate Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and three assists. Seniors Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) and Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) also collected goals on Senior Day, and freshman Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) rounded out the Panther scoring.
Sheridan increased her PSU career-record totals to 252 goals and 336 assists. She is now ranked ninth all-time in Division III in goals, and tied for 11th all-time in points.
Junior Kristine Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) led the Corsairs with three goals, while sophomore Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) added two and senior Megan Corfield (Framingham, Mass.), junior Candice Oyer (Carlisle, Mass.) and freshman Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, Mass.) scored once each.
PSU senior goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) made four saves in the first half, and junior Kristin Elliott (Exeter, N.H.) came on in the second half and made six stops. UMD senior Liz Holland (Quincy, Mass.) finished with nine saves.
Plymouth State receives a bye in the first round of the LEC Tournament, and will host the conference semifinals at Arold Field on Friday, Apr. 30, with the rest of the field and game times to be determined. UMD will play a first-round game Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.
