WATERVILLE, Maine – Freshman Megan Towe (Potomac, Md.) scored two of Colby College’s three goals in the final 7:05 of play Tuesday evening to help the Mules pull away for a 12-8 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference women’s lacrosse at Bill Alfond Field.
The Panthers (4-4) had pulled to within 9-8 when senior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) scored on a free position shot with 7:58 remaining, but Towe and sophomore Cary Finnegan (West Hartford, Conn.) helped put PSU away with three unanswered goals.
Colby had defeated Plymouth State twice on the same field last year, 24-15 during the regular season and 21-5 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
MacDonald finished with two goals, one assist, five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Panthers. Seniors Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) and Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) both had two goals, with classmates Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Liz Boddy (Brentwood, N.H.) chipping in with one goal each.
The Mules (5-3) led 7-2 at halftime as sophomore Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) had three of her four goals in the opening 30 minutes. After Sheridan’s fourth goal to start the second half, Plymouth State responded with a 5-0 scoring run to make it 8-7. Colby’s Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) tallied with 15:21 left to make it 9-7. Nickerson also had six caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Sheridan also had an assist with her four goals, while Barrett had one goal with her two assists. Finnegan scored twice, Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) and Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) both had one goal and one assist, and Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) and Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, Mass.) both had two assists.
Senior Catharine O’Brien (Reading, Vt.) made eight saves in about 45 minutes of work in goal for Colby. Junior Suzie Lilakos (Stratham, N.H.) kept the Panthers in the game with 20 saves.
PSU looks to stop a three-game losing skid Thursday with a Little East Conference game at Keene State, weather and field conditions permitting (4:00 p.m.)
