WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Junior Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) and sophomore Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) scored four goals apiece Monday evening to lead the Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Frostburg State University in PSU’s season opener.
The win marked the first career victory for PSU head coach Paula Habel. Frostburg State had its three-game winning streak stopped and fell to 4-2.
PSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead midway through the first half, and held an 8-5 advantage at halftime. The Panthers maintained the lead in the second half. Frostburg State pulled to within two goals (10-8) late in the game, but Brown and Cupoli added insurance goals with 4:29 and 3:26 remaining to secure the win.
Sophomore Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) also scored two goals and an assist for PSU, while junior Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) collected one goal each.
Cupoli also led the team in ground balls with six, while Pinault picked up five. Sophomore Suzie Lilakos (Stratham, N.H.) made nine saves in the Panther goal to earn her first career victory.
PSU will play another game in Florida on Friday, facing Trinity College (Conn.) at 9:30 a.m.
