PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State University scored three unanswered goals in the first five minutes and never looked back Saturday afternoon as the Panthers defeated Rhode Island College, 18-3, in Little East Conference women’s lacrosse action.
PSU stays unbeaten with a 10-0 overall record and 5-0 in the Little East Conference, while RIC falls to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the LEC. The Panthers, who have won 19 consecutive games overall dating back to last season, are also 20-0 in the three-year history of the Little East Conference.
Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) led the Panthers, scoring a game-high three goals and adding two assists. She extended her conference leading season totals to 46 goals and 19 assists. Freshman Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) scored twice and assisted on three other goals.
Five other Panthers — senior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.), sophomore Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.), and freshmen Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), SeaSea Fuhrman (Lakewood, CO) and Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.), collected two goals each in the win.
Senior goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Shodack, N.Y.) played the first half and made six saves to earn the win. Freshman Suzie Lilakos (Stratham, N.H.) played the second half and stopped two shots.
For RIC, freshmen Brittany Rosen (Derry, N.H.), Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Shana Griffin (Barre, Vt.) each scored in a losing effort. Freshman goalie Micaela Morris (Barrington, R.I.) made seven saves.
PSU is right back in action Sunday at 11:00 a.m., hosting Bowdoin College. The Polar Bears are the last team to defeat the Panthers, pulling out an 8-7 overtime decision on Apr. 13, 2003.
RIC will host Castleton State on Sunday and Roger Williams on Monday.
