SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Therese Lefebvre (Weymouth, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half Tuesday evening and Salem State College went on to defeat Plymouth State University in a non-conference women’s soccer game, 1-0.
Lefebvre finished off a cross from junior Joanna Strafford (Weymouth, Mass.) with 18:25 remaining in the first half. The Vikings, who are ranked seventh in New England, improved to 8-2-1 overall with the victory, while PSU slipped to 6-5.
The outcome was the second straight 1-0 loss for the Panthers to one of New England’s top-ranked teams. PSU also dropped a 1-0 decision to second-ranked Eastern Connecticut last Saturday.
Salem State finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal, and had a 4-2 margin in corner kicks. Freshman Kelli Reardon made three saves in the Vikings net to earn the shutout, while PSU juniors Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) and Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H.) combined to make seven stops.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday, visiting Keene State for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The Owls are in second place with a 2-0-1 conference record, while the Panthers are tied for third with Western Connecticut at 2-1-0.
