BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Mary Kate Cunningham (Holden, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Emmanuel College in the Panthers’ season opener.
The host Saints got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Jessica Steverman (Weymouth, Mass.) at the 11:19 mark. Cunningham tied the score less than two minutes later with her first goal, assisted by classmate Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.), and added a go-ahead goal late in the opening half with help from junior Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.).
Sophomore Catherine Bruno (Belmont, Mass.) evened the match for Emmanuel with just under 20 minutes remaining in the second half, but Erwin notched the game-winner for PSU with 11 minutes to play, with Pettrey assisting.
Emmanuel, an NCAA Tournament team last season which opened its campaign Friday night with a 3-2 triumph over Wentworth, finished the game with a 19-13 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Kanee Chlebda (Medway, Mass.) finished with nine saves for the Saints, while PSU junior goalies Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H.) and Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) combined to make eight saves.
Plymouth State, 1-0-0, returns home to host Norwich Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the home opener at Panther Field. Emmanuel, 1-1-0, plays again Tuesday at MIT 4:00 p.m.).
