DANBURY, Conn. – Western Connecticut State University held on to defeat Plymouth State University, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Little East Conference women’s soccer action at Westside Athletic Complex.
The Colonials, 10-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the LEC, got on the scoreboard first with an own goal in the fourth minute. The Panthers defense attempted to clear a crossing pass in front of the goal and it deflected off PSU senior goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) into the back of the goal.
Sophomore Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) scored the first of two goals on the afternoon in the 15th minute to give WestConn a 2-0 advantage.
Plymouth State drew within one goal in the 68th minute when junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season. She was left alone in front of the goal following a failed clear attempt by the Colonials.
Crayco added an insurance goal, her fifth of the season with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The final tally came off a corner kick and a quick pass from Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn.) and Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, Conn.), respectively.
WestConn sophomore Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) made five saves, while Quinones finished with seven saves for Plymouth State. PSU dropped its sixth straight game to fall to 3-9-1 overall and 1-3 in the LEC.
WestConn will celebrate Senior Night in its final regular-season home game this Thursday when it hosts Westfield State in a non-conference match-up (7:00 p.m.) The Panthers are off until next Saturday (Oct. 22) when they visit Rhode Island College for an LEC affair (1:00 p.m.)
