PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and freshman Alex Marcell (Pittsford, Vt.) scored two goals each Saturday morning as Plymouth State University coasted past Newbury College, 8-1, in the women’s soccer season opener for both teams.
Senior Georgia Rooney (Kent, Conn.) also added a goal and two assists for the winners, as PSU outshot Newbury, 33-2. The Nighthawks, playing in their first collegiate varsity game, gave a solid effort and broke the shutout on a second-half goal by freshman Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, Mass.)
Newbury hung tough for the first half, as PSU led only 2-0 midway through the stanza on goals by Minervini and freshman Jess Babino (Scarborough, Maine). The Panthers pulled away as the first half went along, with two goals from Marcell and one each from sophomore Britt Phelps (Bow, N.H.) and Rooney, to make it 6-0 at the intermission.
PSU extended the margin to eight to start the second half on goals by senior Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) and Minervini before Greene-Allen put the Nighthawks on the board with 15 minutes remaining.
The Panthers are home again Tuesday against Fitchburg State (5:00 p.m.) Newbury is also back in action Tuesday, visiting Nichols College (4:00 p.m.)
