PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Wheaton College took four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles encounters Friday afternoon at the P.E. Center Courts to defeat Plymouth State University, 6-3, in the women’s tennis season opener for both schools.
The Lyons got two wins each (one in singles and one in doubles) from sophomores Ashley Kriwinsky (Munsun, Ohio) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), senior Maris Madeira (Southwest Harbor, Maine), and freshman Brianna Jackson (Redding, Conn.). Kriwinsky was one of the top players in the nation as a freshman last year, posting a 17-2 record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Plymouth State, which showed improvement after dropping all nine matches to Wheaton last season, got two wins apiece from juniors Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) and Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine). The match marked the debut of PSU head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett.
The victory for the Lyons gave a successful Homecoming for head coach Lynn Miller, who is a 1974 graduate of Plymouth State and was inducted into the PSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
PSU, 0-1, returns to action next Thursday (Sept. 9) with a match at Colby-Sawyer (4:00 p.m.). Wheaton, 1-0, returns home to host Union (N.Y.) Saturday (Sept. 4) at 1:00 p.m.
