NEW LONDON, N.H. – Plymouth State University captured three of the four singles brackets and two of the three doubles brackets Saturday and Sunday to capture first place among three teams in the first Colby-Sawyer Shootout women’s tennis tournament.
The Panthers finished with 68 total points, while Colby-Sawyer was second with 23 points and Castleton State took third with three points.
PSU senior captain Whitney O’Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) advanced to the finals in the ‘A’ bracket, but was defeated by Colby-Sawyer junior Alex Hardenbrook, 6-4, 6-2. Hardenbrook also knocked Panther sophomore Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) out of the ‘A’ bracket with a 6-0, 6-2 decision in the semifinals.
Panther junior Erica Huckins (Plymouth, N.H.) took the ‘B’ flight with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the final over senior teammate Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.). In the ‘C’ flight, senior Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) of PSU defeated her teammate, freshman Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H./ConVal), 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the final. Plymouth State senior Liz Duell (Hopewell Valley, R.I.) finished off the singles brackets, winning the ‘D’ final, 6-3, 6-4, over her teammate, junior Kiley Boyd (Brattleboro, Vt.)
It was an all-PSU final in the ‘A’ doubles bracket as O’Leary and Huckins pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) win over teammates Xavier and Deyermond. In the ‘B’ bracket, Cole and Duell scored an 8-4 win over teammates Rodier and sophomore Briley Boisvert (Goffstown, N.H./Trinity). Colby-Sawyer’s Teresa Frechette and Danielle Fantasia kept the doubles bracket from being a Plymouth State sweep, picking up a 9-7 win over Boyd and junior Brittany Campbell (Newport, R.I.) in the ‘C’ bracket.
Plymouth State makes a visit to Endicott College on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match before returning home for the home opener at the P.E. Center Courts against Colby-Sawyer on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4:00 p.m.
