PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s volleyball team received its fourth consecutive post-season berth Monday with its selection to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers (22-16) received the third seed in the six-team tournament, and will face sixth-seeded Roger Williams University (19-8) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at top-seeded Coast Guard. Plymouth State is playing in the ECAC Tournament for the third time in four years, in addition to last year’s NCAA berth.
The other first-round match Friday has fourth-seeded Rivier (27-9) meeting fifth-seeded Endicott (23-15), while top-seeded Coast Guard (23-5) and second-seeded Wellesley (23-9) receive first-round byes. Coast Guard meets the Rivier-Endicott winner Saturday in one semifinal (10:00 a.m.) while Wellesley faces the PSU-RWU winner in the other semifinal (12:30 p.m.) The two semifinal winners meet for the title Saturday at 4:00 pm. at Coast Guard.
Plymouth State, led by eighth-year head coach Moira Long, received the ECAC berth after sharing the Little East Conference regular season title with a 6-1 mark. The second-seeded Panthers were knocked out of the LEC Tournament in the semifinals by third-seeded Keene State, 3-2.
PSU first qualified for the ECAC Tournament in 2002, when the seventh-seeded Panthers were defeated in the first round by second-seeded Coast Guard. Plymouth State won its first post-season match in 2003 when the third-seeded Panthers knocked off sixth-seeded Emmanuel before losing in the semifinals to second-seeded Brandeis, 3-1.
Roger Williams received the sixth seed in this year’s ECAC tourney after finishing in third place during the regular season in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Hawks advanced past Wentworth in the first round of the CCC Tournament before being defeated by second-seeded Endicott in the semifinals, 3-0.
PSU, which made its first NCAA appearance last season, is playing in its third ECAC Tournament. The Panthers’ previous selections came in 2002 and 2003.
