BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Kristen Reske (Duxbury, Mass.) hit a three-point basket at the final buzzer, her only points of the game, to lift the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s basketball team over visiting Plymouth State University, 65-62, in a Little East Conference contest Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center.
Plymouth State owned a 61-57 lead with 1:20 to play before senior Denise Ridge (Milton, Mass.) converted a lay-up to pull the Beacons to within two with 1:08 to go. Junior Alicia Querusio (Somerville, Mass.) pulled the Beacons a point closer, making one of two free throws with 18 seconds on the clock. PSU junior Meghan McDonald (Salem, N.H.) did the same on the other end to give the Panthers a 62-60 margin with 13 seconds remaining, but sophomore Jenn Widener (Hyde Park, Mass.) was fouled while making the defensive rebound off the missed free throw and then sank both of her free throw attempts to tie the game at 62-62.
Plymouth State missed a lay-up on its possession and the Beacons called timeout on PSU’s end of the floor with 2.9 seconds showing on the clock. Widener then found Reske on the far side of the court with a long pass, to set up the game-winning shot. The Beacons improve to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in LEC play, while the Panthers fall to 4-9 and 1-3.
Junior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) led all scorers with 16 points for PSU, while senior Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 14 points. Querusio led the Beacons with 15 points, while Ridge and junior Ashley Greene (Brookline, Mass.) contributed 11 points apiece.
The Panthers owned an early 12-5 advantage before UMass Boston went on a 20-7 run to take a 25-20 lead with 4:12 to go in the first half. The Beacons maintained their lead and went into the intermission with a 29-23 advantage.
Plymouth State put together a 9-1 stretch to knot the contest at 35-35 with 12 minutes left in the second half. The teams played within five points of each other the rest of the way and were tied for the seventh time at 55-55 with 2:35 remaining in the game, before the Panthers scored four straight points to take a 59-55 lead with 1:49 left in the tilt.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday in 1:00 p.m. LEC contests, with UMass Boston visiting Rhode Island College and Plymouth State returning home to host Eastern Connecticut.
