PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior guards Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) and Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) scored 14 points apiece Tuesday evening as Plymouth State University’s women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 68-57 victory over Castleton State College at Foley Gymnasium.
White made 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, while Mahoney did her work at the free throw line, sinking 10-of-12 from the stripe. They got solid support from classmates Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass./Savio Prep) and Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.); Linehan finished with 12 points and seven boards, while Thomas contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior Jenn Whiting (Granville, N.Y.) led all scorers, putting up 21 points for the Spartans along with eight rebounds. Classmate Carrie Black (Warrensburg, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points and eight boards, while junior Carley Amedore (Schenectady, N.Y.) finished with six points and team-high nine rebounds.
Castleton held the early advantage, leading by as many as seven points midway through the first half. PSU came back and took the lead and held a two-point margin (26-24) at halftime.
The Spartans regained the lead early in the second half, and went up by six points (41-35) with 13 minutes remaining. PSU called timeout, then scored the next 12 points to take a 47-41 lead with nine minutes to play. The Panthers pulled away over the next five minutes to win by 11.
PSU returns to action next Tuesday (Nov. 29) with a non-conference game at Colby-Sawyer (7:00 p.m.) Castleton State, 1-2, plays again Tuesday (Nov. 29) at Middlebury (5:30 p.m.)
