WELLINGTON, Fla. – Plymouth State University’s women’s lacrosse team gave a strong effort Monday against the 16th-ranked team in the Division III national poll, but the Panthers were defeated by Trinity College, 8-5, in a non-conference contest played in Wellington, Fla.
Plymouth State led 3-1 midway through the first half and 4-3 late in the half before Trinity scored twice in the last 90 seconds to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. The Bantams took a two-goal lead early in the second half, but PSU cut the margin back to one goal (6-5) with 12 minutes remaining. Trinity held PSU off and added a pair of insurance goals with 9:32 and 5:25 on the clock to secure the win.
The Panthers got goals from five different players – seniors Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) and Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) and juniors Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.), Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) and Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) Evans also had an assist, while MacDonald and sophomore Jackie Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) shared the team lead with five ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece. Cupoli chipped in with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Senior Christine Ryan (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Allen (Penfield, N.Y.) combined to score four goals to lead the Bantams.
Sophomore goalie Sarah Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) finished with four saves for PSU.
The Panthers, 0-2, look to rebound Wednesday in their second of three games on the Florida trip, facing Goucher College at 4:30 p.m. Goucher received votes for this week’s national Division III poll. Trinity faces 17th-ranked Union Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.
