WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) recorded a game-high seven points Saturday afternoon but the Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team was defeated in its season opener, 18-10, to non-conference opponent Babson College.
Plymouth State fought hard on Abi Jackson’s head coaching debut. The game was all tied up 4-4 midway through the first half before the Beavers went on a unanswered 5-0 run and eventually took an 11-6 advantage into the half. The Panthers tried to bounce back in the second half, but the Beavers prevented the comeback and came out on top.
Pinault led the Panthers with a game-high four goals and three assists, while classmate Meg Cupoli (Northboro, Mass.) contributed three goals. Senior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) tallied one goal and one assist, while classmate Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored once and freshman attacker Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal.
The Beavers were led by junior Anita Martignetti, who score three goals and assisted on three occasions, while freshman Kaitlyn Pettengill added four goals.
Senior Jennie Wiliams made seven saves for Babson in the winning efforts, while PSU goalie Suzie Lilakos (Stratham, N.H.) had nine saves in net for the Panthers.
PSU will travel to Florida next week where it will play three non-conference games against SUNY Fredonia, Allegheny and Franklin Pierce.
