BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) lofted a direct kick from 25 yards out into the upper left corner 10 minutes into the second half Saturday afternoon to give the Plymouth State University women’s soccer team the winning margin in a 2-1 win over Little East Conference foe University of Massachusetts Boston at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Panthers improve to 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference, while the Beacons fall to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the LEC.
Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) headed a cross from junior Casey Bishop (Topsham, Maine) into the right side of the UMB net just 5:44 into the match. UMass Boston equaled the score when sophomore Lara Miele (Medford, Mass.) delivered a cross from the right side of the PSU goal and found sophomore Jenney Pascarelli (South Boston, Mass.), who deposited the ball into the right corner at 20:31 for a 1-1 tie.
The Panthers outshot the Beacons, 26-6, including 12-3 in the second half, but could only manage one more goal, the game-winner by MacDonald.
Junior Kurstin Meehan (Edgartown, Mass.) stopped 14 shots for UMass Boston, while PSU junior Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) made one save in the first half and classmate Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H.) turned away both shots she faced in the second half to earn the victory.
