PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s soccer team earned its first post-season berth in three years Monday with its selection to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers received the sixth seed in this week’s tourney, and will travel to third-seeded Salem State College on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. first round contest. The first round winners will advance to the semifinals Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The championship game is slated for Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The rest of the ECAC Tournament field includes top-seeded Brandeis, #2 Keene State, #4 Western Connecticut, #5 Smith, #7 Nichols and #8 Wentworth. Salem State captured last year’s tourney championship.
Plymouth State, led by third-year head coach Keith Scarlett, will take a 10-6-1 record into the tournament. The Panthers, which posted their first winning record in three years, finished third in the Little East Conference during the regular season but were eliminated by Rhode Island College in the first round of the LEC Tournament. This will be PSU’s first post-season berth since playing in the ECAC Tournament in 2000.
Salem State returns to the ECAC Tourney this season after nearly qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament. The Vikings, who have an 11-2-6 overall record, advanced to the title game of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament, but were eliminated by Bridgewater State on penalty kicks (3-1) after battling to a scoreless tie. One of Salem State’s wins this season was a 2-0 decision over Plymouth State on Oct. 7 at Plymouth.
PSU is making its eighth ECAC appearance this year, and its 18th post-season appearance since 1983. The Panthers’ previous ECAC selections came in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000. Plymouth State captured ECAC Championships in 1983, 1984 and 1995.
