GORHAM, Maine – The Plymouth State University women’s tennis team captured four of six singles flights and two out of three doubles matches Tuesday afternoon en route to a 6-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference match played at the USM Field House.
The win was the sixth straight for the Panthers who improve to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Southern Maine slipped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the LEC play.
Sophomore Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) and senior Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) were double winners for the Panthers. The two combined to win the number two doubles match, and returned to the courts to post wins in the number two and four singles matches, respectively.
Other winners for the Panthers were junior Erica Huckins (Holderness, N.H.) at number three singles, freshman Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H.) at number six singles, and the combination of seniors Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) and Liz Duell (Hope Valley, R.I.) at number three doubles.
For the Huskies, senior captain Katie Welch (Calais, Maine) secured a pair of points with a win at number one singles, and combined with junior Emily Green (Cumberland, Maine) for a win at number one doubles. Chelsea Parady picked up the other USM point with a victory at number five singles.
The Huskies will travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday for their next match (3:30 p.m.). Plymouth State travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for a battle between the two schools tied for first with unbeaten conference records.
