PLYMOUTH, N.H. – One of the biggest secrets on the Plymouth State University campus is being held by the women’s tennis team.
The Panthers, who compete during the fall for their regular season and conference championships, will be in action for the first time this spring. PSU captured the Little East Conference championship last fall, and earned the LEC’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, which is held in the spring. This year’s event is slated for May 4-6.
“We’re thrilled to be representing Plymouth State and the Little East Conference at the NCAA Championships,” said head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett. “We’re going to play some matches in April to get tuned up, and go and give it our best shot.”
The Panthers will meet Southern New Hampshire University this Friday, Apr. 13, in a home dual match (3:30 p.m.), and will compete against the University of New Hampshire Club Team on Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 a.m. PSU finished 8-3 in dual matches last fall, and captured the LEC title for the second time in three seasons.
“We’re not really sure what to expect at the NCAAs,” said Rawlsky-Willett, “but I know our ladies are looking forward to it. It should be a great experience.”
Members of the Panther tennis team that will compete in the NCAA Championships are senior co-captains Erica Huckins (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional) and Brittany Campbell (Newport, R.I./Rogers), juniors Briley Boisvert (Goffstown, N.H./Manchester Trinity) and Joan Kietzman (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional), sophomore Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H./ConVal), and freshmen Amanda Arponen (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South), Melissa Castellano (East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) and Denise Huckins (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional).
Erica Huckins and Kietzman won LEC singles titles last fall at #3 and #5, respectively, and Kietzman and Rodier teamed up to win the #2 doubles crown.
PSU’s No. 1 singles and doubles player from last fall, junior Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane), is studying abroad this semester and will miss the event.
