PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s volleyball team won its first two matches of the season Friday evening at Foley Gymnasium, registering a pair of victories in the Cobblestone Inn Invitational, hosted by PSU.
The Panthers opened play with an easy 3-0 triumph (30-10, 30-22, 30-11) over Lasell College, and completed pool play unbeaten with a 3-2 come-from-behind decision (28-30, 30-21, 26-30, 30-21, 15-8) over Western New England College. PSU advances to the semifinal round, which is Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Seniors Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Kirsten Willoughby (Plymouth, N.H.) led the Panther effort. Ciulla posted a team-high 15 kills and eight blocks in the win over Lasell and added 10 kills, seven blocks and 20 digs against WNEC. Landry contributed 19 kills and 12 digs on the evening, and Willoughby added 15 kills.
Senior Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) also registered 11 kills and nine blocks in the two matches, and senior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) finished with 25 assists against Lasell and 35 vs. WNEC.
Johnson and Wales University won both of its matches in the opposite pool to advance to the semifinals. WNEC, Lasell, Clark and Mount Ida all continue pool play Saturday at 9:00 a.m., battling for the two remaining spots in the semifinals. The consolation rounds are at 1:00 p.m., followed by the championship match at 3:00 p.m.
Plymouth State captured the 2002 and 2004 tournament titles, sandwiched around the 2003 championship which was claimed by Williams College.
