WALTHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State University got off to a good start at the Brandeis Volleyball Judges Classic Friday evening, registering 3-0 victories over Newbury College and Endicott College.
The Panthers opened the competition with a 30-15, 30-25, 30-24 triumph over Newbury, and came back with a 30-27, 30-24, 30-26 decision over Endicott. PSU improves its record to 21-13 overall heading into Saturday’s matches in the tournament.
Seniors Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panther performance Friday. Ciulla recorded 13 kills and six blocks against Newbury and 16 kills and 20 digs in the win over Endicott, while Landry chipped in with 13 kills against Newbury and 11 kills against Endicott.
Other strong efforts were turned in by senior Stacy Therrien (Rochester, N.H.), who had eight kills in the first match, and sophomore Kim Tobyne (Bedford, N.H./West), who made 31 digs in the two matches. Senior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) finished with 83 assists in the two matches.
PSU plays three more matches Saturday afternoon at Brandeis, facing the hosts at 12 p.m., Gordon College at 3:00 p.m., and finishing off the day with a 5:00 p.m. contest against Little East Conference co-champions Eastern Connecticut.
