SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team took six of 10 individual bouts Friday night to capture a 23-18 dual match victory over American International College.
AIC took three of the first five bouts, with sophomore Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) at 125 pounds and sophomore Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) at 149 the only PSU winners. Winning for the home team was junior Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) at 133, sophomore Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) at 141 and sophomore Martin Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) at 157.
PSU won the next four contests to take control of the team match, with sophomore Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) at 165, senior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 174, senior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 184, and freshman Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) at 197 posting wins for the Panthers. Freshman Rob McAviney (Cheshire, Conn.) suffered an injury forfeit in the final bout of the night.
The Panthers, 6-10-1 in dual matches, will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 8, at a quad meet at Trinity College, which also includes Springfield College and Johnson & Wales University. The New England Conference Championships are Feb. 23-24 at the University of Southern Maine.
