SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team ended the regular season on a disappointing note Saturday afternoon, dropping all three matches in a quadrangular meet hosted by Springfield College.
The Panthers were defeated 41-12 by Springfield, the third-ranked team in New England; 31-16 by Johnson & Wales, the top-ranked team in New England; and 28-15 by Trinity College. PSU completes the regular season at 6-13 in duals, while Springfield went 3-0 on the day to improve to 11-8, JWU is now 15-7, and Trinity is 9-14-1.
Freshman Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord HS/Tilton Prep) turned in one of the few strong performances for PSU at 133 pounds, winning bouts against Springfield and JWU and receiving a forfeit victory against Trinity. Moseley is now 20-8 on the season.
Seniors Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine) and Billy Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) collected two wins apiece for PSU. Gurney finished 2-1 on the day at 184 pounds, improving his season record to 20-9, while Wilbert was 2-for-2 at 197 pounds, upping his season mark to 10-4.
Sophomore heavyweight Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) and freshman 141-pounder Devon Hanson (Sanbornton, N.H./Timberlane) also won one match each for PSU. Wilbert is now 18-10 on the season.
PSU will compete in the annual New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championships on Feb. 18-19 at Wesleyan University. The Panthers will be out to improve on last year’s sixth place finish among 15 teams.
