PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team concluded the regular season with a win and a pair of losses Saturday in a quad meet hosted by Johnson & Wales University, the 12th-ranked team in the nation in Division III wrestling.
The Panthers were edged by defending New England champion Springfield College, 24-21, in their first match of the day, followed by a 29-7 defeat at the hands of Johnson & Wales, New England’s top-ranked team. PSU wrapped up the day with a 34-9 victory over Trinity College (Conn.).
Plymouth State wraps up the dual meet campaign with an 8-12 record, the most wins in a season since the 2001-02 squad finished 9-7. Johnson & Wales is now 18-3, Springfield is 9-12, and Trinity is 1-22-1.
Four Panther wrestlers were double-winners on the day. Sophomore Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H.) won two bouts at 133 pounds, and senior Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) collected a pair of wins at 141. Freshman Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) did the same at 149 pounds, and classmate Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) matched the performance at 165.
Freshman Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) won his first bout at 197 pounds, but was handed only his third loss of the season by Diego Crespo of JWU, who is ranked #1 in New England in the weight class.
St. Ours owns the top individual record at PSU with a 21-3 mark. Laganas is next best with a 20-9 record, while Connolly is third at 17-9.
PSU now gears up for the annual New England Collegiate Conference Wrestling Association Championships, held this year at Roger Williams University on Feb. 17-18. The Panthers are looking to move up from last year’s eighth place finish.
