BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Plymouth State University won two matches and lost two matches Sunday and ended up in 11th place at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State College.
The Panthers were defeated in their opening match by Southern Maine, 22-19. PSU won its first consolation round bout over Trinity College, 31-18, but suffered another setback to the Coast Guard Academy, 25-22. Plymouth State finished the day on a positive note, defeating Wesleyan University in the 11th place match-up, 25-18.
The 2-2 record on the day gives PSU a 4-8 mark in duals for the season. Johnson & Wales posted the only perfect 4-0 record in the tournament, defeating Norwich in the championship match to claim the team title.
Plymouth State was led by senior Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine), who won all four of his matches at 184 pounds, including one by pin and one by major decision. Senior Billy Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) went unbeaten in three bouts at 197 pounds, and sophomore Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) won captured three out of four at 285 pounds, with his only loss coming to Trinity senior Mike Blair (Plymouth, N.H.), who is ranked third in the nation in the weight class.
Five other Panthers picked up two wins on the day. Freshman Devon Hanson (Sanbornton, N.H./Timberlane) went 2-0 at 141 pounds, freshman Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord HS/Tilton Prep) won two out of three at 133, and freshman 149-pounder Zeth Nolda (East Lyme, Conn./Waterford), sophomore 157-pounder Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and junior 165-pounder Brandon Black (Keene, N.H.) each won two and lost two. Sophomore Bruce Pacy (Triton, Conn.) won his only bout at 197.
There’s now a three-way tie for the Panther team lead in wins between Moseley (15-6), Gurney (15-7) and Shaun Wilbert (15-6).
PSU returns home to host WPI in a dual meet Wednesday at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.) WPI finished 13th at Sunday’s New England Dual Meet Championships.
