PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University won two out of three matches Saturday afternoon in a quad-meet held at Foley Gymnasium, defeating Massachusetts Institute of Technology (36-10) and Norwich University (35-7) before losing to Bridgewater State College (32-12).
The Panthers defeated MIT for the second time this season, and upset Norwich after losing to the Cadets in a dual last weekend. PSU, which is ranked #10 in New England, is now 7-1o on the season, while Bridgewater State, ranked fourth in New England, is now 14-9, Norwich, ninth in New England, drops to 4-11, and MIT falls to 2-11.
Seven Panther wrestlers captured two individual victories on the day. Freshman Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) was 2-0 at 197 pounds to improve his team-best record to 20-2. The other six all finished 2-1 for the day: freshman Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, senior Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) at 141, freshman Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) at 149, freshman Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) at 165, junior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 157, junior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 197.
While St. Ours owns the top record on the team, Laganas is now 18-8, Schieding is 16-11, Connolly is 15-8, junior Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) is 12-6 in the 285 pound weight class, and Wilkinson is 11-8.
PSU wraps up the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 3, with a quad meet at Johnson & Wales with Trinity and Springfield.
