PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State University senior Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine) defeated Rhode Island College sophomore Kevin Davis (Amston, Conn.) at 184 pounds Wednesday evening, 5-0, snapping a 21-21 deadlock and lifting the Panthers to a 24-21 win in the first wrestling dual meet of the season for both teams.
The verdict gave Plymouth State first-year head coach Jason Holder his first collegiate coaching victory.
The Panthers took a 21-0 through the first five matches of the evening. Sophomore Bruce Pacy (Triton, Mass.) at 197 pounds, sophomore Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) at 285, and freshman Corey Betty (Lowell, Mass.) at 125 pounds captured decisions to put PSU up 9-0; junior Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) recorded a key pin over RIC senior Todd Bloom (Wantagh, N.Y.) at 133 lbs; and PSU received a forfeit victory at 141.
The Anchormen tried to mount a comeback as freshman Kurtis Strout (Columbus, Conn.) earned a decision at 149 pounds, junior Luis Feliz (Cranston, R.I.) recorded a pin at 157, and the visitors got forfeit wins at 165 and 174, tying the match at 21-21, but Gurney stood tall for the Panthers in the decisive match.
Both teams are back in action this Saturday at the R.I.T. Invitational in Rochester, N.Y.
