PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The New England Wrestling Association’s pre-season conference polls are out, and Plymouth State University is ranked ninth in the Division III poll.
Bridgewater State College was picked first in the Division III voting, receiving eight of the 14 first-place votes and 133 points. Roger Williams University got three top votes and finished second in the poll with 117 points, and Springfield College, five-time New England champs from 2002-06, was third with 111. Defending champion Johnson & Wales University received the other three first-place votes and finished fourth in the voting with 108 points.
The rest of the top 10 (with points) includes Williams (84), Wesleyan (62), Southern Maine (53), Rhode Island College (50), Plymouth State (32) and Norwich (13).
The Panthers are guided this season by first-year head coach Tommy Prairie, a former All-American wrestler at Williams College. PSU is coming off a season that included an 8-12 record, a seventh-place finish at the New England Championships, with three place-winners and one individual New England champion and NCAA national qualifier.
PSU will have a Green and White intra-squad scrimmage this Saturday at Foley Gymnasium (1:00 p.m.) The season officially kicks off with a home dual match on Wednesday, Nov. 14, against Norwich University (6:00 p.m.)
