PSU’s “First Fire” – Building a Tradition

PLYMOUTH-There’s nothing more inviting on a crisp fall morning then settling into a comfortable chair with a hot drink in front of a roaring fireplace.  In Plymouth State University’s Hartman Union Building, the Fireplace Lounge is an inviting and familiar spot on campus to relax and enjoy a good book or the company of friends while basking in the warmth of a crackling wood fire in a grand fireplace. That scene, repeated many times over, is the inspiration for PSU’s “First Fire” ceremony, which was inaugurated November 9 with several hundred students looking on as PSU President Sara Jayne Steen lit the “First Fire,” and English Professor Liz Ahl read poetry celebrating the event. Students were provided “First Fire” mugs, along with warm beverages and cinnamon rolls.  “First Fire” will be an annual event, with new mugs provided each year, to celebrate PSU’s warm, familial surroundings and the onset of cooler weather.
