PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Plymouth State University and Rhode Island College split the six women’s tennis singles matches Saturday afternoon, but the Anchorwomen registered a 6-3 Little East Conference victory over the Panthers on the strength of sweeping the three doubles encounters.
The victory improves RIC to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in LEC play, while PSU drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Plymouth State registered singles victories at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 by sophomores Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) and Meg Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) and senior Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine), respectively. Xavier improved her record to a team-leading 4-1.
RIC’s singles winners included Liz Barrette at No. 1, Carminda Rocha at No. 2, and Kristin Mandsager at No. 6. Barrette and Meghan Mooney were victorious at No. 1 doubles, as were Rocha and Tara Marchant at No. 2 and Mandsager and Caitlin Morin at No. 3.
The Panthers are on the road again Tuesday with a non-conference match at Castleton State.
